Overview

Philosophy

This Doctor PhD. Degree presents the principles of translation and interpretation with special emphasis on theory, text analysis, effective research methods, and team work. It considers the particular characteristics of business, technical, and legal texts; the theory of translating literature; and the methods for dealing with diverse information media.

Rationale

The proposed PhD in interpretation is intended to respond to the situation outlined in the philosophy of this course by providing students who wish to undertake doctoral studies in interpretation, with an opportunity to delve into the theoretical and practical depths of interpretation in which they have research interest. The course also gives such students an opportunity to acquire necessary competences and to advance their research and practical skills.

Admission Requirements

The common regulations governing admission into PhD programmes at the University of Nairobi shall apply.           

    1. In addition, applicants must be holders of a Master of Arts in Interpretation degree from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.
    2. In addition to the requirements in (i) above, the applicant must have high level proficiency in English and one or more of the following languages: French, Kiswahili, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, and German. Candidates with local African languages shall be able to use them for research and as additional languages in their practice.
    3. To ascertain proficiency in the applicant’s working languages, pre-qualified candidates shall sit and pass an entrance examination.

The Department admits new students at the beginning of every academic calendar year (which is usually September)

Mode of Delivery

  • Face-to-Face Mode

This is through lectures and tutorials using notes, electronic presentations, instruction manuals, group discussions, practical laboratory demonstrations and fieldwork.

  • Open, Distance Learning and e-Learning

In case of delivery through ODeL, special arrangements shall be made for the practical laboratory, field work and computing sessions. Where not feasible alternative arrangements will be made to do them on campus. 

  • Blended Learning

This is a hybrid of face to face with Open, Distance Learning and e-learning.

Career Prospects

Careers Prospects in Interpretation Include;

 

  • Conferences - You could work in-house for a large international organisation or as a freelancer working within large events and international conferences, European council meetings, political events, lectures and trade fairs.

 

  • Business - smaller functions such as company meetings, training, business/factory tours, negotiations, business discussions, or formal dinners. This work could be undertaken by either conference or public service interpreters.

 

  • Public service interpreting (PSI) - includes the police, criminal justice system and probation service interviews, solicitor interviews, court hearings, arbitration hearings, immigration tribunals and local government meetings.
