Overview

1. Goal of the Programme

The goal of this revised programme is therefore to strengthen the University of Nairobi graduates’ linguistic skills and cultural knowledge in Chinese so that they are able not only to communicate fluently and appropriately in the language but also to possibly teach it as a foreign language in Kenyan schools.

2.  Expected Learning Outcomes

At the end of this programme learners should be able to:

  • Describe the Chinese characters and the science behind them.
  • Explain the basic concepts of Chinese linguistics.
  • Analyse written Chinese texts of various lengths.
  • Critique a lecture/speech given in Chinese.
  • Compose a variety of academic and non-academic texts in Chinese.

3. MODE OF DELIVERY

  1. Face-to-Face Mode

This will include traditional instructional methods such as lectures, class presentations, seminars, and tutorials.

2. Open, Distance, and e-Learning Mode

With the language laboratories and subscribed online resources available at the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi, the students enrolled in this programme will have abundant opportunities to complement what they will be introduced to during the face-to-face sessions. Moreover, taking advantage of the cooperation between the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi and other universities outside Kenya, the students will also get an opportunity to be taught by teachers from the latter. Most importantly, this mode constitutes the perfect environment to foster asynchronous learning.

3.  Blended Learning Mode

This is an educational approach that combines traditional classroom instruction with online, digital learning methods. Blended learning integrates face-to-face interaction with technology-mediated activities such as virtual discussions and video lectures. A mixture of face-to-face and e-learning modes therefore constitutes a golden opportunity for synchronous and asynchronous teaching to complement each other to the great benefit of the learners.
