Overview
Philosophy
The Doctor of Philosophy in Translation is a research-based program that provides advanced training in translation studies. The program helps the candidate in understanding of fundamental and advanced issues in linguistics and translation, enables him or her to communicate their knowledge with excellent oral and written skills, and motivates them to take the lead in research and development in their field of expertise.
Rationale
The proposed PhD in translation is intended to respond to the situation outlined in the philosophy of this course by providing students who wish to undertake doctoral studies in translation, with an opportunity to delve into the theoretical and practical depths of translation in which they have research interest. The course also gives such students an opportunity to acquire necessary competences and to advance their research and practical skills.
Objectives
The general goal of this programme is to provide learners with the opportunity to develop advanced skills and confidence as professional translators who will, in turn, be able to train others. Thus, improving knowledge advancement to the people who in turn will improve their productivity and be able to participate better towards the advancement of knowledge and skills in line with the national Vision 2030 and the pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The specific aims (objectives) are to:
- Equip students with skills in the discipline of translation and to enable them to do research in translation.
- Enhance students’ intellectual and practical skills necessary for the challenges appertaining to the teaching, research and practice responsibilities they are likely to engage in after graduation.
- Impart students with critical scholarly skills in the discipline of translation in order produce professionals with high competence in translation and to create a reservoir of highly trained translation scholars who may be called upon to take up academic responsibilities in teaching and research in the discipline and able to train high-level manpower for various aspects of translation-based professional engagements in the capacity of policy advisors, consultants, researchers and planners in a wide range of public and private undertakings.
Admission Requirements
The common regulations governing admissions into PhD programmes at the University of Nairobi shall apply.

- In addition, applicants must be holders of a Master of Arts in Translation degree from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.
- In addition to the requirements in (i) above, the applicant must have high level proficiency in English and one or more of the following languages: French, Kiswahili, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, and German. Candidates with local African languages shall be able to use them for research and as additional languages in their practice.
- To ascertain proficiency in the applicant’s working languages, pre-qualified candidates shall sit and pass an entrance examination.
Careers
Career Prospects
The students upon graduation will have an opportunity to work as freelance translators as well as teach in the institutions that train translation. They also stand a chance to be court translators in the law courts.

Structure
Schedule of Intakes
The programme is designed to have intakes every year in September.
Application information
The application is online where the applicants follow the self-guiding process until when requested to pay the application fee as indicated. The applicant must attach copies of all the required documents. Upon verification of the documents and having met the admission requirements, the admission letter is given.
Attachment Opportunities
There are attachment opportunities available from our partners including the UN Nairobi office BTL and other partners who are in the Language Service Provision Industry.
Mode of Delivery
The programme shall be offered through face-to-face and Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) modes.
2.1 Face-to-face
2.1.1 This mode will include lectures, class discussions, seminar presentations, tutorials, video demonstrations and assignments.
2.1.2 Learners will attend scheduled lectures at specified venues of the University of Nairobi.
2.1.3 Learners will attend practical translation sessions at approved scheduled venues.
2.2 Open, Distance and e-Learning
2.2.1 This will involve open and distance learning modes involving largely “home” study or any other place of learner’s choice.
2.2.2 It will involve well prepared self-instructional print or electronic modules as well as online learning.
2.2.3 Limited face-to-face sessions will be provided for tutorials and examinations at the University of Nairobi regional learning or study support centres.
2.2.4 Mediated electronic study materials will be provided to support or enhance learning.
