The Department of Linguistics and Languages is marking the International Mother Tongue Day, 2016. The day, set aside by the United Nations in recognition of the importance of mother tongues, is marked every year on February 21. However, because this year February 21 fell on a Sunday, the Department will mark the day on February 23-25, 2016. 

The three day event will include speeches, entertainment and presentations of academic papers on issues relating to mother tongues.

The African Languages Conference - 2014 comes at a time when debate on the underepresentation of African Languages is raging accross the continent. Dr. Maloba Wekesa was invited to be among the Key note speakers in the conference organized by the Amabhubesi Group in conjunction with the University of Pretoria.

The16th Triennial ACLALS Conference, was held at Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa and Beach Resort in conjunction with The Open Campus, St. Lucia, of the University of the West Indies from August 5-9, 2013 on the theme: “‘The current unbroken/the circuits kept open’: Connecting Cultures and the Commonwealth.” The Department of Linguistics and Languages was represented by Dr. Maloba Wekesa who also presented a paper titled "Understanding Discourse at Word Level".
