The German Studies Program of Department of Linguistics and Languages organized a two day regional conference on German Studies, funded by the DAAD. During the conference, young scholars of German Studies from Sudan, Cameroon, Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Uganda presented their project proposals in various thematic areas under the guidance of mentors. The Opening speeches were made by the DAAD Regional Director, the Ambassador of Austria in Kenya as well as from representatives of the German Embassy in Nairobi. Prof. Kithaka wa Mberia, the Chairman of the  Department of Linguistics and languages, who also spoke at the conference lauded the effort and encouraged the assembled scholars to heighten academic exchanges and publications in German Studies.

In addition, the Association of Scholars of German Studies in Eastern and Central Africa (GOZA) was formally launched. The president of the Association is Dr. Meja Ikobwa and his deputy is Dr. James Orao with the Secretary General being Dr. William Wagaba (Makerere University) and Ahmed Kaggwa (Treasurer, Makerere University). This marks the beginning of a program that will see regular conferences, workshops and publications aimed towards giving the German Studies scholars in the region opportunities for scientific dialogue, exchanges and networking. We look forward to many successful conferences and interesting publications!
